BioD and LanzaJet to study the feasibility of a SAF plant in Colombia

Share

Leveraging Colombia’s available biomass potential and strategic location, BioD and LanzaJet are exploring pioneering production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in Latin America. By integrating ethanol-to-SAF conversion technologies, the initiative marks an important advance for the region, starting specifically in Colombia.

Bogotá, Colombia – May 9, 2025

BioD and LanzaJet are pleased to announce the start of a feasibility study to develop the first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production plant in Colombia, a milestone as one of the pioneering SAF production initiatives in Latin America. This project goes beyond theory: it is a concrete commitment to the future of sustainable aviation and to a shared vision called “A Gift from Earth to Sky.”

After more than three years of intensive evaluation of over 20 technologies, BioD has selected the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology developed by LanzaJet, a global leader in scalable ethanol-to-SAF conversion solutions. The feasibility study will analyze the technical, economic, and operational requirements for implementing this technology successfully and sustainably in the country.

“This is not just theory; it is about building the future starting today. Our commitment is to produce SAF in Colombia using agroforestry residues and energy crops eligible under CORSIA, creating a positive impact on the local economy and the environment,” said Carolina Betancourt, Head of the Bioenergy Business Unit and project leader at BioD.

This ambitious study positions the project as a regional benchmark in Latin America for the production of sustainable aviation fuels and marks a decisive step toward consolidating and including SAF in Colombia’s energy mix by 2029. In this way, it supports diversification, the energy transition, and the shift toward innovative solutions for air transport.

The initiative is also aligned with the national SAF roadmap, strengthening Colombia’s strategic role in developing a productive and sustainable industry that connects the countryside with industrial transformation and social inclusion.

“This feasibility study is an important milestone for Colombia and for the growth of SAF across Latin America. We are proud to bring our proven ATJ technology to this partnership with BioD and to support Colombia’s efforts to build a more sustainable energy future,” said Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaJet.

With this alliance, BioD and LanzaJet reaffirm their commitment to decarbonizing the aviation sector through innovation and consolidate their leadership in the transition to sustainable aviation.
